in 1949, The united states made up an organization called NATO. NATO stands for "North atlantic treaty organization." it was dominated by the United states and was a treaty of mutual defence.
-Members: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States. The other member countries are: Greece and Turkey (1952), Germany (1955).
When the USSR saw that NATO was formed they copied them. in 1955, the Warsaw pact was formed. it is exacly like NATO except run by the USSR. It contains the Capitalist west and all eastern european countries.
